Crank and Slotted Link Mechanism: This mechanism was invented by Whitworth in the 1800s. The mechanism consists of a slider, crank, fixed link, slotted lever, connecting rod and ram. The crank is connected with the slider and fixed link. When the cranks start rotating the connecting rod pushes forward and backwards the ram.

B. 300 mm

D. 700 mm

SOLUTION

Concept:

The length of cutting stroke = 2 × CB

From the triangle O2CB

2 × CB = 2 × O2B sin θ

(sin theta = frac{{{O_1}A}}{{{O_1}{O_2}}})

Calculation:

Given, Driving crank length, O1A = 100 mm

Slotted Bar length, O2B = 500 mm

In triangle O2O1A

(sin theta = ;frac{{{O_1}A}}{{{O_1}{O_2}}} = frac{{100}}{{200}} = frac{1}{2})

Length of cutting stroke = 2 × O2B sin θ

⇒ Length of cutting stroke = 2 × 500 × 0.5 = 500 mm

7. Define Grashoff’s law and state its significance.

Return

It states that in a planar four bar mechanism, the sum of shortest link length and longest link length is not greater than the sum of remaining two links length, if there is to be continuous relative motion between two members.

Significance:
Grashoff’s law specifies the order in which the links are connected in a kinematic chain. Grashoff’s law specifies which link of the four-bar chain is fixed.(s+1)=(p+q) should be satisfied, if not, no link will make a complete revolution relative to another.
s= length of the shorter length
l= length of the longest link
p & q are the lengths of the other two links.

8. Define Inversion of mechanism.

The method of obtaining different mechanism by fixing different links in a kinematic chain is known as inversion of mechanism.
